The module provides a grounding in the description of linguistic patterns and structures. Students are introduced to essential concepts and terminology in descriptive linguistics, including models of phonology, morphology, grammar, semantics and pragmatics. In a range of practical exercises, they will gain practice using the models discussed. There is an emphasis on using those models to analyse naturally occurring data from English and other languages, and the module aims to provide students with the linguistic concepts, terminology and skills that they will make use of in other modules and in their Dissertations.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
understand core analytical concepts in phonology, morphology, grammar, semantics and pragmatics
apply core concepts to analyse naturally occurring language use, from English, and selected other languages
critically evaluate the analytical tools they are presented with, in their own terms and in terms of their application to the student's wider academic and professional practice
present their analysis of language using appropriate disciplinary conventions
