This module introduces students to concepts, skills and techniques essential to carrying out research in Applied Linguistics, both in general and in helping prepare students for their Masters' dissertation project. Topics include: types of research project in Applied Linguistics; selecting and refining a research question; developing a research instrument, methods of collecting, analysing and presenting data; writing a dissertation.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the validity and viability of a (set of) research question(s) in their field of study
Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the strengths and limitations of a range of quantitative research methodologies.
Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the strengths and limitations of a range of qualitative research methodologies
Demonstrate the ability to present and interpret quantitative and qualitative research data effectively and appropriately
