This module is devoted to the classic phase of ancient Egyptian, the language of the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000 BC), known as `Middle Egyptian¿. Students will be introduced both to the hieroglyphic script and to the Egyptian language through the analysis of grammar, the acquisition of vocabulary and regular translation exercises, all of these being reviewed in class.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
show understanding of how the hieroglyphic script works, and transliterate passages of text;
translate simple passages of Middle Egyptian;
offer a basic grammatical analysis of such passages.
show awareness of linguistic factors when using translated primary texts to address archaeological and historical questions
identify problems of interpretation, lexicography and translation.
