Description Interpretation is the art of revealing the meaning and significance of objects and places. This module considers the philosophy of interpretation and its good practice, and debates such issues as authenticity, selectivity and bias. Interpretation is considered in the contexts of recreation management, tourism education, archaeological site presentation, historic properties and museums.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate awareness of the principles and best practice in interpretation
  • Show knowledge of the key theoretical and philosophical stances behind interpretation theory including an introduction to communication theory
  • Show appreciation of the current issues in interpretation: `hot' and `challenging' interpretation; interpreting contemporary issues; multi-culturalism; `authenticity; and communicating with people with a disability
  • Understand the process of exhibition planning including practical elements of design
  • Demonstrate transferable skills in research activity and communication of ideas
  • Demonstrate the ability to gather, organise, and interpret appropriate materials for study, and to carry out work showing initiative and independence of judgement
