Description	This module provides an introduction to the language for students with no previous knowledge. The course aims to develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, which will lay the foundation for further study and will help you to develop strategies for coping with the target language in real-life situations. Teaching is through practical language classes involving both whole-group and small group / pair-work activities with emphasis on communicative settings, use of visual aids and audio/video materials from the internet where appropriate.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module you should be able to: Recognize some Chinese script and decode and encode basic texts. Deal with predictable activities in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Show understanding of basic spoken target language. Extract relevant information from simple texts written in the target language. Conduct basic conversation in the target language. Convey simple information in writing. Display knowledge of cultural contexts and conventions appropriate to language use at this level.
