Description The module consists of 11 sessions of core skills, worth 20 credits. 6 out of 11 sessions are taught by the College of Arts and Law as components of its generic research skills programme (these are 6 online courses). The other five sessions are taught by members of the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion focusing on discipline specific topics. Some of these sessions will focus on core philosophical skills and others introduce students to more interdisciplinary research. All the 11 sessions will be delivered online.
The discipline specific topics that will be addressed include at least some of the following:
  • 1. Critical Thinking in philosophy
  • 2. Reading in philosophy
  • 3. Research skills (finding literature appropriate for PGT study in the school)
  • 4. Dissertation planning
  • 5. Presenting philosophical arguments in written work
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • find the appropriate literature for essays and dissertations at the M-level, and read critically scholarly books and articles in peer-reviewed journals for the purpose of developing essay/dissertation plans
  • Analyse and construct complex arguments in philosophy and ethics
  • show understanding of the requirements of interdisciplinary philosophical research in their own research area.
  • develop an M-level dissertation project with clear objectives.
  • prepare a detailed, well-presented dissertation proposal

26057-11 : Assessment Option 1 : Coursework (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
1 x 2000 word critical notice essay (50%) and 1 x 2000 word dissertation research proposal (50%)
OR
1 x 15 minute presentation on a paper related to the dissertation project (50%) and 1 x 2000 word dissertation research proposal (50%)
