Description
How do we tell the history of the world without assuming a single centre? This core module will pick up this question in two ways. The first will deal with key issues in the current historiography of global history, such as the world’s geography at both the macro and micro level, periodization and the question of how to distinguish between historical periods on such a grand scale and the importance of the environment in human history. The second thread will explore different ways in which past societies have understood the global world. Thus, we will explore the importance of religion, debates about the status of indigenous knowledge and finish with an in depth examination of a key text bringing together many of the themes of the course.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Analyse and evaluate key historiographical and methodological issues relevant to Global History
Analyse and appraise the implications of these issues with reference to primary sources and secondary literature across a broad chronological and regional range
Critically engage with examples of interdisciplinary work of relevance to Global History and use this to inform research questions
Analyse, synthesise and critically engage with these themes in both oral and written form.
