This module is for those who will start learning Japanese from scratch. The emphasis is on the acquisition of basic grammatical knowledge for communicative competence and learning of 100 Kanji. Students will develop the passive skills (reading) as well as the active skills (writing); i.e. writing short compositions). Students will learn basic language structures and registers in depth.
Students will be given the opportunity to work in a group as well as individually.
The course will also aim to equip students with the ability to access the language autonomously.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Show understanding of basic Japanese language structures

Show a firm understanding of three types of Japanese script (Hiragana, Katakana and Japanese Chinese character/Kan-ji).
Listen to and show detailed understanding of short examples of Japanese spoken by native speakers of Japanese and understand the gist of more extended speech.
Read and understand short semi-authentic texts in Japanese.
Read and write approximately 100 Japanese Chinese script (Kan-ji).
Show a good command of Japanese using three types of Japanese scripts (Hiragana, Katakana and Kan-ji).
