Description
This module addresses general questions relating to the historiography of warfare and considers how the subject has evolved from ancient times to the present. The principal schools of military history are considered together with those individuals who have made a major contribution to the evolution of the discipline. This module is designed to be more general and reflective than other War Studies modules, to aid independent thinking and reflection by students on the subject they have studied for three years at university.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of how and why the historiography of warfare has evolved from biblical times to the present.
Review and reflect on the significance and influence of key historians of warfare from Homer to Michael Howard.
Analyse, contextualise and evaluate the diverse and interdisciplinary nature of current scholarly approaches to the history of warfare.
Deploy the resulting knowledge to good effect in answering a generally phrased question showing an advanced level of independent-minded reflection upon the historiography of war.
