Description This module is designed to introduce students to the various considerations that need to be taken into account when teaching languages to young learners. The content deals with a range of theoretical and practical aspects:

- what is a young learner?
- language in the young learner classroom
- focus on literacy: reading and writing
- teaching grammar and lexis
- materials and resources
- classroom management
- young learner assessment
- course-books and syllabus
- teaching young learners with special needs

The module refers specifically to teaching English to young language learners, but much of the content is also applicable to other contexts where students might be teaching other languages to children.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • formulate a sophisticated understanding of what makes teaching language to young learners different from teaching languages to adults;
  • critically assess how to meet some of the challenges a teacher may encounter when teaching languages to young learners;
  • compare and evaluate the needs of young learners, particularly in respect to learning and the assessment of learning;
  • analyse the needs of young learners from a wide variety of backgrounds.
