Description
The paradox at the heart of World Heritage is that it is a brand that makes heritage sites more attractive to visit, yet in increasing numbers of visitors, the very heritage itself can be threatened. This module seeks to explore and explain key concepts in tourism management, such as carrying capacity, de-marketing, local community involvement, stakeholder participation and other key elements. Content will focus on World Heritage Sites endorsed through the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Tourism, Culture and Development
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a clear understanding of the issues arising at World Heritage Sites through the development of tourism and the practices and behaviours of tourists.
Review national and local policies and appropriate stakeholders relevant to the management of World Heritage Sites and the management of tourism.
Identify, analyse and implement effective strategies for the sustainable and culturally sensitive management of tourism at World Heritage Sites.
Develop a tourism management plan geared to the needs of World Heritage and their local communities.
