Description This module will equip international students with English for academic study at an undergraduate level. It will enable students to perform successfully in all areas of the Birmingham Foundation Academy Programme, as well as developing their skills in English for Academic Purposes. More specifically, the module will cover the following areas:
  • General academic vocabulary and grammatical accuracy
  • Plagiarism
  • The structure and grammar of undergraduate level written assignments
  • Academic reading, writing and listening skills
  • Developing and presenting own point of view, academic argument and discussion (both orally and in written form)
  • Presentation skills
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:

1) Structure and write a fully-referenced foundation level essay using appropriate academic language, with evidence of the ability to:
a) Form sentences accurately using academic vocabulary and suitable grammatical structures
b) Link ideas in a coherent manner
c) Use appropriate paragraph structure
d) Make use of simple argumentative structures, such as weighing up pros and cons

2) Demonstrate ability to carry out focussed reading of specific foundation level material in order to answer a specific essay question

3) Demonstrate ability to carry out extended reading of foundation level material in order to answer a specific essay question.

4) Demonstrate ability to contribute to classroom/group discussions in an appropriate way. 5) Demonstrate ability to organise and deliver an academic presentation with good fluency and communicative technique.
