Description The module will equip BFA students with appropriate study skills to cope with the demands of academic study at undergraduate level in a range of disciplines. It will cover academic skills for dealing with written information such as texts, listening to lectures effectively and the production of academic texts such as essays and reports. The module will foster skills and behaviours such as criticality, teamwork, reflection and self-managed learning.
Specifically the module will cover the following areas:
  • Producing academic texts such as essays or reports
  • Selection and interpretation of source material
  • Library and information skills
  • Critical analysis of texts and sources
  • Effective note-taking
  • Avoiding plagiarism
  • In-text referencing and the production of a bibliography
  • Listening to lectures effectively
  • Language and vocabulary development
  • Speaking skills for presentations, seminars & group work and intercultural competence.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:

1) Structure and write a fully referenced foundation level essay or report using appropriate academic conventions demonstrating
a) Appropriate selection and exploitation of source material b) Knowledge of structure and text organization c) Accuracy in use of grammar and vocabulary

2) Demonstrate a critical approach to reading and be able to identify arguments, assumptions, to evaluate evidence and conclusions.

3) Demonstrate a range of speaking skills for different academic contexts to be able to contribute effectively to group work and discussions.

4) Demonstrate appropriate skills and strategies for listening to lectures.
