The aim of this module is to provide an overview of major topics and issues in psycholinguistics and cognitive studies of language. We look at how people produce and understand language; how language is organized in the mind and brain; the embodied and metaphorical basis for language; the relationship between language and thought and the significance of linguistic diversity; the development and acquisition of language; and the connection between language and gesture. There is a strong emphasis on cognitive science and experimental methods.

By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an advanced understanding of basic issues in the psychology of language
Demonstrate an ability to critically read and analyse research reports in psycholinguistics and cognitive science
Demonstrate an ability to carry out reviews of literature and support an extended argument with references to the research literature in psycholinguistics and cognitive science
Conduct and report on a small-scale research project exploring a topic related to the psychology of language
