This module will highlight the roles translators play in promoting access to audiovisual content via services and activities such as audio description, captioning and fan subtitling. Work will focus on monomodal and multimodal text types and authentic contexts in which they are routinely translated/meditated, such as in the arts and heritage sector and publishing. Via case studies, students will be encouraged to evaluate the current provision of descriptive and subtitling services and the policies underpinning them, and to understand the constraints involved in responding to the needs of diverse audiences. Students will also discover the creative and educational potential of multimodal translation via a discussion of innovation within its fields.

By the end of the module students should be able to:
demonstrate in-depth knowledge of translation/mediation within real-world contexts;
demonstrate an up-to-date understanding of collaboration between translation professionals (subtitlers, describers) and other stakeholders (service users, curators, artists);
demonstrate an ability to describe and evaluate innovation within the field of multimodal translation;
demonstrate advanced research, writing and proofreading skills;
demonstrate competence in the use of web technologies and an ability to manage files and other media/sources.
