Description This module is aimed at teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and prospective teachers. Taking a language-based approach to literary texts, the module examines why and how literature might be used to teach English to speakers of other language. It tackles the selection and use of a variety of types of text which might broadly be called literature.

The module will investigate ways in which we can use various literary forms to help language learners develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Literature will also be considered as a source of motivation among language learners, and, where appropriate, of cultural enrichment.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Show a critical understanding of the issues involved in teaching English language through literature;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ways in which literary texts can be used to explore relationships between form and meaning in written and spoken English;
  • Critically evaluate pieces of literature as potential English language learning material;
  • Demonstrate appropriate understanding of the methods of teaching literature for English language learning.
