The module will offer students an introduction to the study of European cinema, from a film studies perspective. Part A of the module will focus on the development of film styles and technology between the appearance of film technology and the arrival of sound. The course topics will be linked to a set of key films, which students will view in the Library’s Group Study rooms or independently, and which will form the subject for seminar discussion.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of the technological development of European cinema from its origins in the silent era up to the conversion to sound;
Demonstrate knowledge of key critical/theoretical approaches in Film Studies (e.g. Editing, Studios, Sound);
Apply their knowledge in analysing set films;
Write effectively about film, deploying specialised vocabulary.
