Description The module helps to guide each MA, MSc, and MRes student through the preparation of a research proposal for their dissertation.

The discipline-specific topics that will be addressed may include some of the following:
  • • Critical Thinking in philosophy
  • • Reading in philosophy
  • • Research skills (finding literature appropriate for PGT study in the school)
  • • Dissertation planning
  • • Presenting philosophical arguments in written work.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • find, summarise and critically assess some philosophical texts – including recent texts - that are centrally relevant to their Dissertation topic.
  • write clearly-articulated and well-structured philosophical essays
  • prepare an appropriate Masters’ level dissertation proposal
  • analyse complex arguments and construct sound philosophical arguments.

36144-02 : Assessment 1 : Coursework (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
OPTION 1: 1 x 2000-word critical notice essay (50%) AND 1 x 2000-word dissertation research proposal (50%)

OR

OPTION 2: 1 x 15-minute presentation on a paper related to the dissertation project (50%) AND 1 x 2000-word dissertation research proposal (50%)

Reassessment:
Same assessment as originally attempted. Failed assessment only.
