Description
This module has three key themes. First, we will address central concepts of organisational behaviour and development and explore their application within faith communities and faith-based organisations, addressing issues such as innovation and creativity, organisational resilience, performance improvement and organisational strategy in religion-related contexts, with a particular focus on the distinctive nature of faith-based organisations. Second, we will engage with theological reflection on organisations and the nature of work from a variety of religious perspectives. Third, we will explore issues around personal and professional development, considering for example succession planning and leadership transitions and pipelines, leading from the ‘second chair’, and strategies for identifying and developing emerging leaders, with an emphasis on developing character and alignment with organisational values.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Engage contemporary scholarship on organisational and personal professional development and its practical application and implications in faith-based contexts;
Reflect theologically upon the nature of organisations, the distinctiveness of faith-based providers and the nature of work within or for a particular religious tradition and explore the implications of these insights within or for faith-based contexts;
Apply their learning to specific practical contexts and challenges in the workplace;
Demonstrate their understanding and application of practical and professional skills in aspects of organisational leadership such as performance improvement, leadership transition, organisational resilience, innovation and creativity.
