Description The module will develop advanced academic skills for undergraduate study in a range of scientific disciplines. The emphasis will be on advanced literacy incorporating critical thinking and analytical skills such as data presentation, the development and evaluation of academic argument, and synthesis of various sources of information.

The incorporation of a lab report and/or dissertation of a discipline-appropriate research project will allow students to develop the terminology and approaches relevant to their chosen discipline.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Structure and write a fully referenced foundation level essay and/or lab report appropriate to their discipline using appropriate academic language and conventions demonstrating:
    a The ability to match structure and purpose in writing
    b The use of appropriate academic grammatical structures such as nominalisation and passive forms
    c The appropriate and judicious use of source material and/or lab data following academic conventions
    d An appropriate lexical range
    e High level accurate language
  • Demonstrate effective oral presentation skills in the context of a short presentation of their research findings and/or lab results. This includes the appropriate use of discipline specific terminology, slide design and effective data presentation.
  • Demonstrate a full range of speaking and interpersonal skills for different academic contexts to be able to contribute effectively to group work and discussions including debates and presentations or oral summaries.
  • Structure and write an extended research project and/ or lab report including data collection.
