This module works as an introduction to Sociolinguistics in relation to Anthropology and Linguistic Ethnography. It discusses how globalisation and diversity are associated to language education in the 21st century. More specifically, this module looks at certain social themes such as ideology, identity, and policy, to see how these themes are demonstrated at multiple levels in language education worldwide. A variety of educational contexts will be covered to discuss teaching and learning English and other languages. This module also explains social phenomena including transnational migration, class mobility, and diasporic multilingualism, to see how language education can be informed by such phenomena.
