Description
In this module, the student undertakes a substantial piece of independent research. This may be based on but will extend work undertaken for previous modules in the MA programme. There is an element of originality in the research and the research may make a contribution to the field of translation study. The student reports the research in a dissertation of 15,000 words in appropriate academic English. In designing, carrying out and writing up the study, the student is supported by a supervisor.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
plan a research project on a topic appropriate to the field, formulating research questions that are appropriate for a project of this scope in the chosen research area;
select and collect data and analyse it, correctly applying an appropriate methodology;
present and interpret findings, and formulate a cogent argument based on those findings;
demonstrate a critical understanding of existing research and of the significance of the student's own work;
demonstrate independence of thought in relating existing research to the student's own work;
plan, draft and produce a final version of an extended piece of academic writing, and respond effectively to a supervisor's advice.
