Description
Material Culture and Heritage explores how material culture reflects human experience, offering insight into ways of life, creativity, technology, and belief systems. It considers both artefacts and built environments as evidence of the past, and how these form the basis of engagement with heritage in museums and sites. Drawing on developments in archaeology and its links with anthropology, art history, heritage conservation, and museum studies, the module is divided into two parts. The first examines the collection, curation, and presentation of material culture in museums and heritage contexts. The second focuses on interpretation, exploring how objects and environments relate to social life, including themes such as technology, ritual, gender, age, ethnicity, and power. By the end of the module, a clear understanding is developed of what material culture is and how it is represented as heritage. Skills are built in researching and interpreting different types of evidence, alongside the ability to critically evaluate how material culture is recovered, managed, and presented to modern audiences.
