Description This module provides students with an overview of the social, cultural and political histories of Europe in the decades immediately following the Second World War. It chiefly addresses how societies, east and west, attempted to rebuild following the conflict, in cultural as well as political and economic contexts, and the ideological conflicts surrounding this process, culminating in the revolutionary events of 1968. With memory serving as the module's unifying theme, students will have the chance to explore the period through primary sources such as film, literature and the visual arts, in addition to secondary sources.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • analyse and critically appraise key events and historical processes relevant to the subject under scrutiny
  • analyse and critically evaluate a wide range of relevant primary source material
  • critically evaluate the historiographical context and trends of the subject under exploration
  • summarise, synthesise and evaluate the subject material in a sophisticated written form
