Exclusions
Description This module is a practical translation module. Students will learn how to translate a variety of consumer-oriented texts (e.g. recipes, leaflets, instructions, marketing material and company websites).

The emphasis will be on:
a) the development of intercultural sensitivity
b) the use of linguistic and functionalist approaches to translation and
c) learning to use background and parallel texts.

Students will work from their language of study into English.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the Module, students should be able to:
  • produce target texts that satisfy the demands of the translation task, and which comply with a given brief
  • search for appropriate information in order to understand the main themes and ideas of a source text
  • show understanding of the source and target culture conventions of different kinds of texts written for different purposes (i.e. the notion of genre, text-type, function, and so on).
  • identify appropriate syntactic, semantic and pragmatic challenges associated with translating consumer-oriented texts

39792-02 : A 700 word commentary in English. : Coursework (50%)
