Intercultural Communication is an optional module, which also offers specific support for students who are new to UK academic contexts through discussion of both theoretical materials and works of culture, many of which have a link to the University of Birmingham (e.g. the Barber Institute; the Cadbury Collection; Winterbourne House). The module will deal with a number of topics, including: How to analyse culture across different cultures; Concepts underpinning successful intercultural communication; Translation and access; and materials studied for the module will be wide-ranging, including aspects such as intercultural communication theory, and the opportunity to reflect on students' own lived experience of intercultural communication.
While the organisation is conceptual, the materials provided will be selected from a range of local, global and transnational cultural contexts. Students will be encouraged to reflect on how intercultural communication can foster dialogue and understanding across cultural contexts.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Produce sophisticated close readings of primary sources (literary/film/online/historic artefact) they have chosen to focus on
Engage with complex theoretical material
Develop an argument which draws on close readings of primary sources and engages with relevant complex theoretical material
