Description This module gives you the opportunity to explore the creation, development, and impact of digital stories. You will engage with both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, examining how technology transforms stories and storytelling across various platforms, which may include social media, podcasting, interactive media, and immersive environments. The module will cover key concepts such as narrative structure, audience engagement, the use of digital tools, and ethical and inclusive storytelling practices. Through hands-on projects, you will experiment with creating your own digital stories, leveraging multimedia elements such as video, audio, and graphic design, as well as critically analysing existing examples and case studies. By the end of the module, you will develop a critical and creative understanding of digital storytelling's role in shaping culture and communication, equipping you with the skills to craft compelling digital narratives.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically assess various digital storytelling forms and platforms, identifying the impact of technology on narrative structure and audience engagement while understanding the cultural implications of these narratives.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of storytelling to inform the creation of a digital story, including an understanding of how narrative techniques can be adapted for different digital formats.
  • Design and produce a digital story using appropriate multimedia tools and techniques and demonstrating adeptness in blending various elements to enhance storytelling.
  • Articulate a comprehensive understanding of the ethical considerations and societal impacts of digital storytelling in modern culture.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Creative group output (from one option listed below) and 500-words supporting documentation (75%)
Group 10-minute media production e.g. video or podcast
Group 10-minute live/immersive experience
Group online digital story, equivalent to 5000-words

Critical reflection on creative process and research, equivalent to 1000-words, which can be submitted as a blog, vlog, video essay or audio piece (25%)

Reassessment:

Failed component only
Creative group output (from one option listed below) and 500-words supporting documentation (75%)
Group 10-minute media production e.g. video or podcast or individual 5-minute media production
Group 10-minute live/immersive experience (cannot be reassessed on an individual basis)
Group online digital story, equivalent to 5000-words or individual digital story, equivalent to 3000-words

Critical reflection on creative process and research, equivalent to 1000-words, which can be submitted as a blog, vlog, video essay or audio piece (25%)
