Description
This foundational module introduces students to the academic and professional dimensions of studying Modern Languages and Cultures. It explores what it means to be a student of languages in a globalised, multilingual world, and how language intersects with identity, community and sustainability. Students will engage with key academic skills –such as critical reading, academic writing and presenting skills- while being introduced to the expectations of university-level study. A distinctive feature of the module is its focus on sustainability in and for Modern Languages, encouraging students to reflect on how the study of languages and cultures can contribute to sustainable development, intercultural understanding and global citizenship. Through workshops and seminars, reflective tasks and scaffolded formative assessments, students will begin to shape their academic identify and professional aspirations.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Develop foundational knowledge and skills for success in Modern Languages and related careers;
Build core academic skills for university success and navigate university resources and digital platforms effectively;
Engage in critical and reflective practice to explore personal experiences, aspirations, and their impact on academic, personal, and professional development;
Promote sustainability and cultural awareness in language learning.

Coursework: 100% Scaffolded personal academic development reflective portfolio (1,200 words, 50%) Independent research project assessed through a poster (max 800 words) plus a 5 minute oral presentation in English (50%)
