Exclusions
Description The module contains three main areas of study: repertoire studies, advanced compositional techniques and issues of compositional aesthetics. Topics include recent stylistic developments in contemporary music, the rational and the intuitive; composers discussed may range from Adès and Adams to Lutosławski and Ligeti.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate a detailed understanding of formal construction and its relationship to materials
  • demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the functioning of contemporary pitch techniques musical material in the vertical and horizontal planes<
  • develop knowledge of recent and current practices and repertoire, and the place of his/her own work in that repertoire.
Assessment 39402-01 : Composition : Coursework (50%)
39402-02 : Essay : Coursework (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

1 composition exercise (50%) in manuscript, completed within a prescribed time limit (2-3 minutes), accompanied by worksheets and notes
1 essay (1500 words) (50%)
