The module contains three main areas of study: repertoire studies, advanced compositional techniques and issues of compositional aesthetics. Topics include recent stylistic developments in contemporary music, the rational and the intuitive; composers discussed may range from Adès and Adams to Lutosławski and Ligeti.

By the end of the module students should be able to:
demonstrate a detailed understanding of formal construction and its relationship to materials
demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the functioning of contemporary pitch techniques musical material in the vertical and horizontal planes<
develop knowledge of recent and current practices and repertoire, and the place of his/her own work in that repertoire.
