This module aims to familiarise students with creative industries, both as a social-cultural formation as well as a field of study. Assigned readings, discussions, and assessments will seek to situate the creative industries in a global context while also attending to the ways that global processes impact local creative workers, scenes, styles, and genres. Particular attention will be paid to the University of Birmingham's legacy in cultural studies, subculture studies, popular culture studies, and media studies. Topics and cases to be explored may include: creativity and creative labour, diasporic cultural formations, global media industries, platform capitalism, and creative communities. This module will also provide an orientation to relevant fields of study through an engagement with foundational disciplinary texts as well as current debates.
