Description This module looks at the practical application of character education. Within the module, students will examine how character education can be implemented in various educational settings, including schools and community organisations. Students will apply critical thinking to develop their own character education interventions aimed at enhancing the cultivation of character and virtues. Students will consider appropriate design methodology and evaluation strategies when developing an intervention.

The main topics covered are:
  • Theoretical underpinnings of character education interventions
  • Creating a culture and ethos designed to enhance good character
  • Teaching character education as a discrete subject
  • Teaching character education through and within core curriculum subjects
  • Teaching character in community settings
  • Designing and developing a character education curriculum intervention
  • Measuring and evaluating the success of character education interventions
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand and explain the theoretical underpinnings of character education interventions.
  • Design, develop and implement a character education intervention in a school or organisation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of approaches to measure and evaluate the success of a new character education intervention.
  • Critically reflect on an intervention and its potential importance for character education.
Assessment 28593-01 : 15 Minute Live Presentation : Coursework (50%)
28593-02 : 15 Minute Viva : Coursework (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment: a 15 minute presentation (50%) and a 15 minute viva (50%). The task for the presentation is to describe a new character education intervention for a school or educational organisation that the student has designed. They are also asked to propose an evaluation strategy for this. The viva will be a Q&A style discussion with the student about the intervention and evaluation idea they have presented.
Reassessment: As above (repeated/revised assessments).
