This module will examine language and its acquisition and will establish this in the context of the educational, developmental and audiological needs of deaf children, their parents and teachers. It aims to develop students' understanding and skills in order that optimum language development in deaf children and young people is facilitated. The areas covered include: development of communication skills, expressive and receptive use of language, development of spoken language of deaf children, development and linguistics of sign language, assessment of language, language interventions and different aspects of children's development and language.
Some of the practical aspects of the module require attendance at the study weekend.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand how communication and language are different but related aspects and that successful combination is essential for language development
Understand the importance of language(s) development to facilitate cognitive and social development, and to support wellbeing and mental health
Understand that early family-centred intervention is essential and must be combined with continued specialist support throughout a deaf learner's education to develop the technical and sophisticated language skills required in adult life.
Understand the importance of the development of language(s), both spoken and signed, as a key component of cultural identity.

There are two components: Language profile of a deaf child provided in a table format, 1 K words (25%) Design of a language or communication intervention, implementation and evaluation, 2,5K words (75%)
Reassessment:
Students must re-submit any failed component in the next assessment period
