Description
This module looks at the importance of communication and language acquisition across all levels of education and development, and at the way that confident communication is embedded in teaching and learning, access to learning, and learning to access. It identifies the importance of communication and language for children and young people’s social development and wellbeing. It focuses on ensuring good access to learning and to information through adaptations of tasks and resources, as well as supporting settings to promote inclusive environments which enhance ability for children and young people with MSI. It emphasises the importance of communication skills for children with MSI as a foundation for learning to access as educational challenges change over time. It focuses on the importance of communication in person-centred-planning approaches, and in promoting the confidence and wellbeing of children and young people with MSI (deafblindness) to advocate for themselves, to develop relationships, and to gain a sense of self and agency. It looks at strategies to develop children’s early literacy and numeracy through tactile and differentiated approaches, and explores ways of inclusively promoting the learning of children with MSI across all settings.
Some of the practical aspects of the module will require attendance at a study weekend.
