Description
The module will focus on understanding mental health in childhood and adolescence, with particular respect to educational contexts. This will include a focus on anxiety and depression, the two most common mental health issues. The module will cover key theoretical models of mental health, including risk factors and individual differences, including those associated with age, gender and other key background characteristics. There is an emphasis on examining practical classroom applications and ways in which good mental health can be promoted in education settings. There will also be a focus on using empirical research evidence throughout the module to underpin any conclusions drawn. As such, the module draws together information from psychology and education with an aim to help understand and inform mental health provision in education settings.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand different types of difficulties in youth mental health, including anxiety and depression, and analyse different possible causes of these difficulties.
Evaluate key alternative theoretical models of mental health in young people.
Examine some of the potential impacts that mental health difficulties in adolescence can have on long-term social and educational outcomes.
Evaluate how theory and research have informed the development of prevention and treatments to improve mental health in young people in education
