Exclusions
Description This module will run over the whole year and will be composed of a few revision lectures, tutorials and hands on. For the option with the residential week the tutorials will be run online as indicated in Appendix 1. The practical sessions will be during the residential week. For the clinical option, the tutorials will be held face to face on alternate Saturday session. The Saturday sessions will also include clinical skills and clinical sessions. The practical sessions are designed to provide the most contemporary evidenced based practice for endodontic surgery and will allow participants to be aware and to perform a range of techniques used in the management of failed endodontic cases, using both surgical and non-surgically approaches in the treatment of periapical inflammation. This module also includes advanced restoration of root filled teeth with discussions on the indication for use of posts or full coverage restorations. This module will also explore and discuss clinical case discussion based on cases presented and developing a research proposal / clinical study.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understanding the handling of the soft and hard tissues in apical surgery
  • Knowledge of the use of the operating microscope for surgery and complex cases
  • Understanding the options for tooth restoration
  • Understanding the clinical indications for dental post use

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Practical – 75%
Oral Examination – 25%

The practical will consist of tooth preparation and obturation with a chosen system taught in the module. The practical will be undertaken over 1 hour and 30 minutes will be dedicated to reflection of the session.

The oral examination will include
Unseen Case – 15%
Presentation (15 mins) on a journal identified by a candidate- 5%
Oral exam 15 minutes – 5%
The oral exam will be conducted face to face.

Reassessment:

Repeated exercises with 3 repeats. If still unsatisfactory the students will have to repeat the module the following year. This does not preclude them from moving to the next module and Year 3.
